Montjean is, as its name suggests, on the Loire, and is situated 30kms downstream from Angers. It is well known for hemp production and has an annual festival every August to celebrate the growing of hemp. Folk musicians come from all over the world to perform at the festival, which culminates in a spectacular firework display on the banks of the Loire.
The river dominated trade for centuries with the locally famous gabare being the working boat of the area. A number of industries grew up around the river and Montjean is now a centre for water activities. These include boat trips, swimming, though not in the river, canoeing and fishing. Montjean is also a centre for crafts like pottery.
A number of wine growers in the area produce wines of the Anjou Appellation Contrôlée quality.
La Pommeraye
… is situated next to Montjean. It has a population of 3000, and is widely known for its educational establishments; these include kindergarten, primary and secondary schools, an agricultural college and a commercial training college. There is also a business area on the outskirts of the town.
It is possible to play most sports and enjoy a wide range of leisure activities, with a choice between yoga, dancing, football, cycling, and many others.
The main square is surrounded by the church, the mairie and some shops. There is a market in the square every Saturday. The town also has a fine modern library. There are several restaurants in the town and a cinema.
Wine production is an important industry and many La Pommeraye wines are of Appellation Contrôlée quality. Some are brought to the UK for sale.
